Die fünf Münchner aus dem Umfeld von Out of Focus klangen etwas nach Gentle Giant. Ihre LP blieb damals unveröffentlicht. Jetzt auf CD, dazu ihre Single von 1974.

The five Munich musicians sounded a bit like Gentle Giant. Their only recorded LP remained unreleased then and is now available on CD with their 7” tracks from ‘74 as bonus.

Die fünf Münchener aus dem Umfeld von Out of Focus – Wolfgang Göhringer war in beiden Gruppen dabei – spielten progressiven Rock, der etwas an Gentle Giant erinnert. Mit Querflöte, aber nicht folkig. Mit Saxophon, aber nicht jazzig. Ihre Instrumente beherrschten sie gut, doch die Stücke sind nicht immer so mitreißend, wie man es sich wünschen könnte. In Sammlerkreisen immerhin ein wenig bekannt waren Saffran durch ihre Single von 1974. Ihre 1975 eingespielte LP blieb bisher unveröffentlicht, da kein Label sie damals haben wollte. Nun kommt sie als CD, die auch die beiden Stücke ihrer Single enthält. Bis auf das eher überflüssige „Eleanor Rigby“ von Lennon/ McCartney und einen übersetzten Text des mittelalterlichen Dichters François Villon ist alles von ihnen selbst geschrieben. The five musicians which can be associated with Out of Focus played a progressive rock reminding slightly of Gentle Giant. Regarding their instruments you can find as well flute and sax. But their tracks with flute don’t sound folky and the ones with sax don’t sound jazz-like. Although their tracks didn’t carry away very often, they really knew how to play. Thanks to their single of 1974 Saffran were known with collectors. Yet their LP of 1975 had to remain unreleased, because they couldn’t interest a label, then. Now the LP is available on CD including the two tracks of their single. Almost all songs were written by the band apart from “Eleanor Rigby” which is by Lennon/ McCartney and a text by the medieval poet François Villon which appeared in translation.
